Beer, pizza, and good company? That’s a no-brainer.

“When I got the invitation and I heard it was at this location, I was just crossing my fingers for taco pizza from A&B,” said Rob Graff, science teacher at Legacy High School.

Rob Graff and other Bismarck-Mandan NDU members gathered at Buffalo Commons Brewery in February.

“It’s nice to go to a brewery, go somewhere not at school, not work-related at all. So, it feels more relaxed,” said Emily Murphy, English teacher at Simle Middle School.

The occasion? An opportunity to get together with friends and colleagues from around the area.

“I have a hard time meeting new people, so this is a really good way for me to reach out and be with like-minded people,” said Emily.

And of course, to celebrate the great work done by local education associations.

“I don’t think people realize just how important unions are,” said Emily.

“I realized, ‘Hey, I’m getting paid more because of what they do for me.’ And when I teach, I know that I’m going to be able to have the autonomy that I need and also be supported by people around me,” said Rob.

“I feel extremely lucky to be in a district where I get paid very well and I have great benefits. And that is all because we have such a strong union, and without it we would be having problems that we see in other parts of the state or other parts of the country where teachers aren’t getting paid what they deserve or they’re not getting the benefits that they deserve,” said Emily.

Strengthening local education associations and strengthening friendships.
